Obituary of Susan R. Smith
Susan R. Smith, 67, passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City on September 8, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The youngest of five children, she was born “Assunta” in 1947 in Brooklyn, NY to Aniello and Josephine Scotto d’Antuono.
She spent most of her childhood in Clarksburg, NJ and graduated from Upper Freehold Regional High School. She started her family in Freehold and continued her education at Brookdale Community College and Thomas Edison State College. In 1985 she moved with her family to Florida where she worked for the IRS and later as a child support case worker for the State of Florida. In later years she moved to Shinglehouse, PA and lastly, coming full circle, she returned to the New Jersey/New York area for her medical care and to live closer to her family.
Susan was proud of her Italian heritage and loved her family deeply. Her greatest times in life all involved her family and friends, having many wonderful shared memories over the decades and visiting the birthplaces of both parents in Torre del Greco and Monte di Procida. She also adored the family dogs Belle, Jasmine and Cocoa.
Survivors are her son, Neal (Steven White) of Napa, CA and daughters Mary Jo (Lenny) Hebert of Tamarac, FL and Susan (Michael) Litt of Somerset, NJ; sisters Theresa Donohue, Gelsomine Curatola and Frances Sculley; and grandchildren Ileana and Haylee Hebert; and Nathaniel, Molly, and Benjamin Litt. She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Scotto.
Private inurnment will be at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Freehold, NJ on Saturday, September 13, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center via the following link:
