Obituary of Richard Barlaam

Richard Barlaam, 74, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, surrounded by members of his family. Born in Ossining, NY, he graduated from Biscayne College in Florida before moving to New Jersey and settling in Freehold. A lifetime educator and youth mentor, he worked with New Jersey's Juvenile Justice Commission and taught social studies in Freehold Borough and Freehold Township, also writing and directing original plays for the Clifton T. Barkalow Middle School Players for over 20 years. In his spare time, he volunteered with the Special Olympics and Tournament of Champions, collected toy trains, and always found the most festive way to celebrate Halloween - or any occasion - by often including fireworks. After retiring, Richard became a beloved fixture at yearly holiday events playing Santa Claus. An avid story teller, he self-published two collections of biographical short stories; he was passionate about music and travel, loved spending time by his pool, and was a die-hard fan of the NY Yankees. He was devoted to his wife of 50 years, a proud father, a fun-loving brother and uncle, and true friend to all who knew him. Richard is survived by his wife Louisa Barlaam; children Geanna Barlaam and Jacob Barlaam; brothers and their wives Raymond & Maria Barlaam and Brian & Linda Barlaam and their families; sisters-in-law and their husbands Geanna Merola & Erik Landsberg and Angie & Nat Rosen and their families. A viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold, on Friday, May 12 from 4:00 to 8:00pm. The Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, Freehold on Saturday, May 13 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Hospital; the Make-A-Wish Foundation; or Holt International.
