Obituary of Leonard P. Bongers

Leonard Paul Bongers, 82, of Jackson NJ, formerly of Powder Springs GA, and West Islip NY, passed away on May 1, 2022. Len is survived by his daughters Jennifer Reed (Scot Reed) of Doylestown, PA and Jeanine Meyer (Edward Meyer) of Farmingville, NY; his grandchildren Kristin Reed, Matthew Reed, Siobhan Meyer, and Riley Meyer, his sister Carol Bongers of Lake Wedowee, AL and brother Gary Bongers of Cape Coral, FL. Preceded in death by his sister Catherine Mauro and his second wife Barbara Howe Bongers. Len was born in Queens, NY, the son of Otto and Madeline Bongers, and grew up in Valley Stream, NY. He was married to his first wife Barbara and they raised their two daughters in West Islip, NY. He worked as a draftsman and civil engineer for Carman Dunne in Lynbrook NY and for the Fulton County Dept of Public Works in Atlanta, GA. He was active in the Lutheran community where he was a faithful steward, taught Sunday school and coached youth softball and basketball for the Lutheran league at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Brentwood, NY. Len was an avid Mets fan and enjoyed building model trains, gardening, singing, dancing, and traveling. Len proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a member of American Legion Post 411 in Islip, NY and Post 294 in Powder Springs, GA. Len’s family would like to thank the staff of Sunrise of Jackson and Holisticare Hospice for their steadfast compassion and support during this difficult time. We will have a celebration of his life on Friday, June 3, 2022 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 307 Hawkins Ave, Lake Ronkonkoma, NY at 10am followed by interment at Long Island National Cemetery at 2040 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, NY at 12:30pm.
