Obituary of Virginia O. Allen

Virginia O. Allen Virginia Allen, who was known to everyone as Ginny, passed away on Monday, January 13th at the age of 90. She lived a very full and productive life. Ginny had many talents and a truly creative mind. She had a difficult time deciding between a career in Art or Nursing. She choose nursing but her Art always continued to play a big part in her life. She graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She received a Masters of Arts degree in education and administration from Columbia University and then went on to receive a Doctorate from Columbia in education, curriculum and instruction. She established the first associate degree nursing program in New England at Newton Junior College in Massachusetts, and then went onto establish a new college department in nursing at the University of Vermont. She founded a new School of Nursing at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. She also worked for the National League for Nursing in New York City where she directed the National Accreditation program for Associate degree Nursing. She has served on numerous national committees and has been president of many organizations including Kiwanis, Zonta, Church Councils and New Brunswick Theological Seminary. She lived for many years at Rossmoor where she served on many committees and then moved to Applewood where she became President of the Resident’s Association and helped to start the Employee Appreciation Fund. She loved living at Applewood and worked hard to make it a more caring and more vital community. She lived for many years with her friend, Ruth Dowdell who predeceased her. She loved being with her family and friends. She loved croquet, traveling, her dogs (Robbie and Tori), skiing in Vermont and the beach. She was a very talented artist and completed many oil paintings. She had a full life and made a positive difference in the lives of others. She will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held for Ginny at the PAC Center at Applewood in Freehold, New Jersey on Wednesday, January 22 at 10 am.
