Obituary of Brother Michael Dwyer
Brother Michael Dwyer, FSC, 70, of the Christian Brothers Academy Community, Lincroft, died Sunday, January 27, 2008 at De La Salle Hall, Lincroft.He was born April 24, 1937 in New York City the son of the late James and Patricia Dwyer of Good Shepherd Parish, Manhattan. He is survived by his brother, James Dwyer, Pittsburgh, Penn.; two nieces, Kathleen Dwyer-Kaminsky, Ridgefield, Conn., and Patricia Wagner, Carol Stream, Ill., and three nephews, Kevin Dwyer, Arlington, Va., Brian Dwyer, Alexandria, Va., and Robert Dwyer, Washington, D.C. Brother Michael Dwyer formally entered the Roman Catholic teaching congregation, the Brothers of the Christian Schools, at Barrytown, N.Y., in 1954. He Received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 1959, and a Master’s Degree from Manhattan College, Riverdale, N.Y. in 1966. He began his teaching career at New York City’s Ascension School in 1959. Later, he taught at Sacred Heart School and St. Raymond’s School also in New York City. In 1966, Brother Michael began a new chapter in his educational career when he assumed the first of several administrative positions at Lincoln Hall, a residential school for court adjudicated young men in Lincolndale, N.Y. He remained in service at Lincoln Hall for 10 years.Beginning in September 1976, and for ten years thereafter, Brother Michael served as a director and vice principal at Paramus Catholic Regional High School in Bergen County. Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, was Brother Michael’s next and final assignment in 1986. During his twenty year tenure in Lincroft he served as vice principal and as a teacher of history at the Academy. A wake for Brother Michael will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Brothers’ Community Residence on the campus of Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catharine’s R.C. Church, Holmdel Township. The interment at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Marlboro Township, will follow the mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Brother Michael’s name to the scholarship Fund at Christian Brothers Academy, 850 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738. Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.
