To My Second Mother, Thank you for letting me toddle down Broad Street on Saturdays to visit you and help hang the wash on the line, bang on your typewriter and piano, and take afternoon naps with you before I went off to kindergarten. For taking me to get my first “salon” haircut, for my first-day-of-school outfit every year, for teaching me how to wear make-up, for your nerves of steel when you let me(as a teenager)get behind the wheel of the Opal and drive with you straight through to Florida from New Jersey. For remaining cool, calm, and collected when I accidentally set the lunch bag on fire inside the car. For treating me to my first plane ride. For highlighting my hair so I could find out if blondes really do have more fun. For being so good-natured when Audrey and I would ring your doorbell on Saturday nights and interrupt your evening bath more times than I can remember. For being there during one of the most difficult periods of my life. For raising a son who introduced me to the love of my life. I love you. I’ll miss you. See you on the other side. Love, Sandy
