Obituary of Robert Lloyd Coutts
Robert Lloyd Coutts, Jr., 87, of Colts Neck Township died Monday, October 26, 2009 at home. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut and was raised in Morristown.
He was graduated from Morristown High School in 1939 and Lehigh University, Class of 1943 where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business. He then entered Northwestern Midshipman School, Chicago and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II from 1944 to 1946.
He was former owner and broker of Remax of Freehold.
He was an active member of the Colts Neck Reformed Church.
Bob was a past president of the Freehold Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He was a past president of the Monmouth County Board of Realtors, a charter director of the Colonial State Bank, Freehold, a founder, past president, and director of Freehold Beautiful, Inc., a director of the Western Monmouth Chamber of Commerce from 1977 to 1986, a former executive committee member of Monmouth Ocean Development Council, an incorporating trustee of the Broad Street School Education Community Center, Freehold, a member of the Freehold Borough Economic Development Committee, an incorporator and committee chairman of Freehold Center Partnership, a member of the Outreach Committee of the Western Monmouth Y.M.C.A., a past treasurer and executive committeeman of American Legion Post No 59, Morristown, a past president of the Downtown Freehold Business and Professional Association, a former member of the Morristown Chamber of Commerce, a past director of the Morristown Y.M.C.A., and a volunteer for Jersey Boy’s State, Florida Boy’s State, and Boy’s Nation. He served on the Colts Neck Township Board of Education from 1992 to 1993
He received the Realtor’s Community Service Award in 1983, Realtor of the Year Award in 1984, Mayor Jack L McGackin Freehold Renaissance Award in 1987, and a citation from Freehold Beautiful in 1988, Exchange Club of Monmouth County Book of Golden Deeds Award.
Bob summed up his life in this way, “Life for me has been a wonderful adventure-and is surely a mountain top experience. I have been blessed and privileged to have known and worked with some extraordinary people and more often than not some ordinary people who have done extraordinary things. They have been my inspiration and my reward.”
He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Lillian Joan Coutts in February and his parents, Robert Lloyd Coutts, Sr. and Beatrice Muchmore Coutts.
Surviving are his loving children, Robert L. Coutts, III, Lisa Coutts, Christina Madsen, Robin Porcelli and her husband James, and Suzanne Selby and her husband Bill; two brothers, Glenn and Clive Coutts; four grandchildren, Taylor, Robbie, Kirsten, and Samantha.; many nieces and nephews; and his loving caregiver, Bernice Edwards.
Visiting hours will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Colts Neck Reformed Church on Monday at 3:00 p.m. followed by interment at Atlantic Cemetery.
