Obituary of Bonnie Denys Schady

Bonnie Denys Schady, 66, most recently of Kensington Court Assisted Living, Tinton Falls, NJ passed away Thursday, May 31, 2012 at St. Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Long Branch due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. Bonnie was born January 2, 1946 in New Brunswick to Carolyn and Joseph Denys. After spending her early years in Old Bridge residing with her maternal grandmother, Bonnie and her parents moved to Woodbridge where she resided until her first marriage in 1966 at which time she moved to Edison. After her divorce, she and her daughter resided in Woodbridge until her marriage to William J. Schady Jr. in July of 1978. At that time, they moved to Colts Neck where Bonnie lived until the death of her second husband in 2002. At that point, Bonnie moved to East Freehold, having fallen in love with the Freehold area and the home she moved in to. In December 2010, she moved into Assisted Living due to the progression of her illness. Bonnie was the Debutante Chairman of the Holly Debutante Ball in 1962, when she made her debut along with her dear friend JoAnn Klein-Ihnat (nee Swallick). She graduated from Woodbridge Senior High School in 1963. She was truly the gal with personality and school spirit and was involved in endless activities- Student Council Officer, Future Business Leaders of America, Current Civics Club, Baronet (the yearbook) and quite naturally, a Cheerleader. Bonnie was proud of her induction into the National Honor Society her junior year. After graduation Bonnie attended Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City , graduating on the Dean’s List with a merit certificate in 1965. She remained the girl with Woodbridge Senior High enthusiasm, regularly attending the WSHS reunions. She returned to school many years later with the support and encouragement of her second husband Bill, feeling like the “senior citizen student”. Bonnie graduated from Rutgers University-Newark College of Arts and Sciences in May 1985 with a major in accounting with honors-Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma. In addition to her academic accomplishments, Bonnie crocheted, knitted and sewed with amazing skill and beauty. She was a wonderful cook, known especially for her homemade pierogies. And Bonnie always loved to dance, starting with those endless hours watching American Bandstand and learning all the new dances continuing up to those special events at Kensington Court. “I love rock and roll” fit her to a tee. Bonnie worked at various positions during her years of employment: secretary to the plant manager at E.I.du Pont deNemours, Newark; Executive Secretary at IBM Corporation, Princeton; and Marketing Assistant, M & T Chemicals, Rahway. Bonnie was predeceased by her father, Joseph Denys and her second husband “my Bill”, William J. Schady, Jr. They were married 24 years and shared a love of horseracing and world cruises. Although they traveled near and far, Bermuda always had a special place in Bonnie’s heart. Bonnie is survived by her daughter, Megan Sendelsky Ash, her son-in-law, Merrick Ash, and her cherished grandson, Logan Ash, who always brought a sparkle to his grandmother’s eyes; her mother, Carolyn Denys; her “adopted” son and daughter-in-law, Bart and Mary Rose Orlans, as well as their daughter, her niece, Veronica; her friend since the age of 7, Judith Clauss Blair; her longtime friend from childhood, JoAnn Klein-Ihnat; dear friends of Bonnie’s and Bill’s, Kate and Marc DeVoe; her many friends in “The Bridge Group” who shared decades of bridge-playing, especially Sue, Mary Jo and Marilyn; Vicki and John Forbes, her dear neighbors in Freehold, Eve and Bill; and of course, her beloved cats, Daisy, Mitzi, Corky and Sunny. Visitation will be at Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Monday from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. followed by entombment at St. Gabriel’s Mausoleum, Marlboro. Please no flowers. (Those of you who knew Bonnie know that she considered flowers, particularly at funerals, a waste.) Instead, if you wish, please make a donation in Bonnie’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater NJ Chapter, 400 Morris Ave, Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834 or to the Monmouth County SPCA, 260 Wall Street, Eatontown, NJ 07724.
