Obituary of Helen S. Doane

Helen S. Doane, 85, of Freehold died peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Helen was born in Freehold and had resided for her entire life in the house where she was born. Mrs. Doane was a graduate of St. Rose of Lima School, Freehold High School, and Trenton State College. She was an elementary school teacher in the Allenwood Elementary School, Hudson Street School and Park Avenue School in Freehold Borough, and Laura Donovan School, Freehold Township where she taught for 25 years before her retirement. Mrs. Doane was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church where she was a member of the church choir, Haitian Committee, and Bereavement Committee, and a Eucharistic Minister. She was known for her beautifully written letters and handwriting. She enjoyed caring for her family, Big Band music from the 1940’s, travelling, and watching the boats at Manasquan Inlet while sipping a cappuccino. She was predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Mary Lamb Shields and a sister, Beatrice Guinan. Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Robert J. Doane; her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and J. Christopher Lewis, Alexandria, Virginia, Kathy and Ted Eckhardt, Friendsville, Tenn., Tricia and Jim Finegan, Gladwyne, Penn., Liz and Rich Harte, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Susan and James O’Connor, Freehold; and 14 loving grandchildren. The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at the parish cemetery.
