Obituary of Stella N. Carter

Stella N. Carter, 91, of Freehold passed away at the Masonic Home of New Jersey, Burlington on Friday, June 21, 2013. A longtime Freehold resident, Mrs. Carter was born in Newark. She was educated in the Newark School system and met the love of her life Colonel Harry B. Carter at St. Casimer’s Roman Catholic Church on January 9, 1943. She and her husband moved to Freehold in 1947. Mrs. Carter was a longtime communicant of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. She spent many happy hours working in the church’s thrift shop on Throckmorton Street. She worked for a number of different businesses in Freehold over the years as a waitress, supermarket worker, seamstress, and an office worker. She retired from the Shop Rite Corporate offices in 1979. Mrs. Carter was an active member of the community. She was a longtime member of American Legion Auxiliary at Post No. 54 in Freehold. She served as auxiliary president for a number of terms. In 1967 she served as the President of the Monmouth County Legion Auxiliary Association. She represented the group at the National Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Freehold Elks Lodge No. 1454, serving in a number of leadership positions including President. She was also a member of the Molly Pitcher Chapter NO. 198 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Carter was predeceased by her husband Colonel Harry B. Carter, her parents Konstanty and Rosali Napiorkowski, and her sister Helen Witjkevich. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Harry R. Carter (Battalion Chief Newark Fire Department ret.) and his wife Jacalyn of Adelphia and Robert A. Carter (Deputy Chief Newark Fire Department ret.) and his wife Mercedes of Freehold. She is also survived by six grandchild, Ellen Malloy, Kathleen Carter, Father H. Todd Carter of Mercerville, Robert John Carter of Newark, Gregory Carter of Freehold, and Anastacia Carter of Freehold and three great-grandchildren, Jenna, Kassie, and Gregory. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 24 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 AM on Tuesday followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold. The Elks Auxiliary will hold their service at 7:00 PM, and American Legion Auxiliary will hold their service at 7:30 PM.
