Obituary of Joseph Melvin Notterman

Joseph Melvin Notterman was born in Brooklyn on January 14,1923. He moved with his family with the first group of settlers to the New Deal Community of Roosevelt, New Jersey when he was thirteen. In Roosevelt, he was a paper boy and boy scout. He graduated from Trenton State College with Honors, served in the Army during World War II, and was a member of General MacArthur’s staff in Occupation Forces in Japan. After the War, he attended graduate school at Columbia University and received his PhD in Psychology in 1950. In 1947, Prof. Notterman married his childhood sweetheart, Rebecca Feldsher. From 1956 to the present, the couple has made their home in Hightstown on the farm where Rebecca grew up. He was Professor of Psychology at Princeton University, joining the faculty in 1956, and served as Chairman of the department during the 1960’s. In addition to his work in Experimental Psychology at Princeton, he was also a trained psychoanalyst. His passions included farming, art collecting, travel, and his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rebecca, his children Abby and Daniel, and four grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at the Roosevelt Synagogue at 12:30PM on Sunday, June 30.
