Obituary of Betty Jean Wyatt Richardson

Betty Jean Wyatt Richardson of Freehold, NJ was born June 6, 1941 in Griffin, Georgia to the late Charlie Wyatt and Dorothy Parks Wyatt. The first of twelve children, she faithfully served the Lord and peacefully entered into eternal rest on August 28, 2013. Betty was a longtime resident of Freehold where she lived since leaving her childhood home and college. Educated in the Spalding County School System, Betty graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Fairmont High School in Griffin, GA in 1959. She later attended Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry in 1963. She worked as a Science Educator in the school system for many years in Monmouth, Ocean, and Union Counties. She retired on June 30, 2010 after 32 years of service. Betty worked for Jesus a long time and was a dedicated member of the Good Hope Baptist Church, where she served under the leadership of Rev. David N. Harrington. Her education and training at Monmouth Bible Institute enabled her to be trained to completely and effectively advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Integrally involved in the ministry, Betty served faithfully as the Youth Sunday School teacher and sang in the Senior Choir. She was also a key participant in establishing Black History Programs at Good Hope. Further, she actively participated in various singing engagements with the Seacoast Choir as well as College Fairs where she was the primary recruiter for Tuskegee University. She let her light shine everywhere she went and knew that if she could help someone along life’s journey, then her life would not have been in vain. She was a true soldier on the battlefield for the Lord; no matter where you were in life, she would see the good in you! She loved the Lord and the Word of God with all her heart. Additionally, Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, and gardening. She leaves to cherish her memories 6 loving and devoted daughters, Dana Grace, Freehold, NJ; Barbara Richardson, Freehold, NJ; Veronica Richardson, Laurel, MD; Monica (Harold) Monte, Covington, GA; Alyssa (Andrew) Perry, Freehold, NJ; Norma (Jamelle) Dean, Laurel, MD. 6 grandchildren, Harold Jr., James, Mike, Marcus, Aislynn, and Andrew; 5 sisters, Barbara (Stanley) Holmes, Riceboro, GA; Vera (Larry) Rome, Conyers, GA; Jacqueline (Willie) Copeland, Griffin, GA; Glenda Williams, Griffin, GA; Bonita (Phil) Willis, Griffin, GA; 2 brothers, Glenn (Gertrude) Wyatt, Jackson, GA and Charlie Wyatt, Morrow, GA. 3 aunts Lizzie Ruth Wyatt, Griffin, GA; Irene Scarborough, Tampa, FL; Louise Berry, Morrow, GA; 1 uncle, Elvin Wyatt, Griffin, GA and special friends Ruby Colbert, Rev. & Mrs. Oates, Mr. & Mrs. Cleothas Hill, Carol Storey-Hodge and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Visitation is from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at the Higgins Memorial Home in Freehold, NJ. Visitation will also be held on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the Good Hope Baptist Church, Asbury Park, NJ from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Betty will be laid to rest in Griffin, GA. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 7, 2013 at McDowell’s Funeral Home, Griffin, GA from 10AM until 12PM. The burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin, GA.
