Obituary of Barbara Clayton Farrington
Barbara Clayton Farrington, age 93, died at Bayshore Community Health Care Center, Holmdel, NJ, on Sunday, October 6.
Born in Trenton, NJ, Ms. Farrington grew up in Freehold, NJ. She was the daughter of the late John Conover Clayton, M.D. and Isabelle Atkinson Clayton. She attended Freehold schools and Miss Fine’s School, Princeton, NJ, which is now part of Princeton Day School. She was a graduate registered dietician. In recent years, she resided at Sunrise at Wall, Wall Township, NJ.
Ms. Farrington lived for over 50 years on Brownsburg Rd. East, Upper Makefield Township, near New Hope, PA, in an 18th century stone farmhouse that she and her husband restored. The house is where General Washington met on December 25, 1776 with General Greene and other American generals to make final plans for crossing the Delaware River and the Battle of Trenton. A passionate and talented gardener, Ms. Farrington’s house and gardens were on tours to benefit the New Hope Historical Society, where she was also a volunteer.
In the New Hope area, Ms. Farrington was employed by Charles Mueller Gardens and Richard Darnell, M.D. She retired as manager of the re-sale shop at the Flemington Fur Company, Flemington, NJ.
Ms. Farrington was predeceased by her sister, Reberta C. Albright of Spring Lake, NJ, and by a brother, John C. Clayton, Jr. of Freehold. She is survived by two nieces, Barbara A. Gille, Spring Lake, and Mary Louise Johnston, West Orange, NJ.
Barbara Farrington will be buried during a graveside ceremony at Maplewood Cemetery, 169 West Main St., Freehold, on Sunday, October 20, 2012 at 11:45 am. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.
