Obituary of Jay D Matthews

Jay D. Matthews, 82, of Freehold Township died Thursday, January 16, 2014 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was born in Spring Lake and was a lifelong resident of Freehold. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954. He was a carpenter for Steve Graga, Farmingdale before his retirement. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lou Matthews in 1993, a brother, Everett Matthews, Jr. in 1989, and a sister, Doris M. Clayton in 2013. Surviving are ten nieces and nephews and spouses, Ross and Debbie and R. David and Meredith Clayton, Colleen and Ken Frank, Thomas and Barbara, Stephen, Douglas, and Kevin Matthews, Ann and Glenn Thomson, Edward and Ann Marie Matthews, and Mary Ellen Matthews; and several great nieces and nephews. The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Sunday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. William L. Frederickson, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Freehold officiating.
