Obituary of Mary Virginia Hillsman Smith

Mary Virginia Hillsman Smith, 94, of Ocean Township died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Medicenter Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Neptune City. Mrs. Smith, one of seven siblings, was born in Lynchburg, Virginia and had resided in Ocean Township for over 50 years. Mrs. Smith was recognized for work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oakhurst and Ruth Circle of the church. She was a past president of the Whale Pond Village Senior Citizens, a member of the Jersey Shore Garden Club, and a past president of the Ocean Township Senior Citizens Club. Her husband of 43 years, George Ernest Smith, an educator, died in 1986. Surviving are her children, Marguerita Jane Dentino and husband Anthony, Robert Marshall Smith and wife Nancy, and Deborah Ann Smith; four grandchildren, Maria Conover, Catherine Dentino, Rebecca Greenfield-Smith, and Jennifer G-S Bianco; seven great grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews; and a large extended family. The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.
