Obituary of Annette J. Horstman

Annette J. Horstman, 94, of Freehold passed away peacefully at Applewood Estates on Friday, October 3, 2014. Born in Paterson, she grew up in Teaneck, and later made her home in Freehold. Annette graduated from Teaneck High School and attended art schools in New York City. She was proud to be accepted in a War Industries Training Program at Steven’s Institute of Technology where she used her artistic talent to excel in drafting and graphic art. That training began a stalwart career in engineering and graphic design at Eastern Airlines ending at the corporate headquarters in New York. She moved to Freehold to be with her family and had a continued a successful career at the Boy Scouts of America National Headquarters in North Brunswick. She worked in the Engineering Service as a technical illustrator of diagrams and plans. She retired after 23 years. After her retirement she utilized her artistic skills in her many volunteer roles in the Freehold area. Annette traveled throughout America and Caribbean. She found a kindred spirit in her husband, Walter, who worked with her on many local charitable causes and with whom she traveled all over the world. Annette was a founding member of Freehold Area Hospital (CentraState Medical Center) and served on the Board of Trustees from 1965-1991. She also belonged to the Woman’s Club of Freehold and served on the Board of the Freehold Library. A painter and illustrator, she enjoyed crafts and her many pets. Her and Walter’s home on West Main Street is still known as the “Butterfly House” because of the 21’ painting of a Monarch on the side of the home – a gift to the community they adopted. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Horstman and her parents. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold is in charge of the arraignments. Graveside services at Old Tennent Cemetery will take place on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Applewood Estates Residents Assistance fund would be appreciated.
