Obituary of Ann Caroline Winters Niehaus

Ann Caroline Winters Niehaus, known as Carol to her family and friends, passed away Monday, May 1st 2023 in Freehold, NJ after a brief illness. She was a vibrant 95 years young. Carol was born in Irvington, NJ on February 16, 1928. Most of her childhood was spent at the Jersey Shore and upon graduating from Asbury Park High School in 1945, Carol entered the US Cadet Nurse Corps Program at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. Strong friendships from these early nursing years were maintained throughout her life. It was during this time that she also met Albert Niehaus. On March 5, 1949 they married and settled in Colt’s Neck, NJ to raise their three children. Carol’s nursing career started with a job at Marlboro State Hospital and then public heath nursing. Later on, Carol became a beloved school nurse in Colts Neck and at Holmdel High School. She continued her own education and earned a masters degree in Health Administration. Singing with Sweet Adeline Barbershop groups, Carol successfully competed at the international level with the Ramapo Valley Chorus. Al and Carol were active members of the Colts Neck Reformed Church, where she enjoyed ringing with Morning Bells and quilting with the Piecemakers. For many years, Al and Carol docked their cabin cruiser at the Molly Pitcher in Red Bank, NJ. Other travel adventures took them to both national and international destinations. Memories of family time in the Poconos and at Lavallette are especially treasured. Carol spent the last several years as a resident of Applewood Estates in Freehold, NJ where she enjoyed making new friends and continued to pursue her interest in health, music, crafts and learning. An avid mystery reader and crossword puzzler, she really had fun with Wordle. When we think of Carol we will remember how she loved the water, the sunshine and the beach. How she loved a glass of wine at “happy”, enjoyed a good laugh and wanted to keep up with news about her family. Carol was always ready… with her earrings in, her lipstick on and that beautiful smile. Carol was predeceased by her parents and her husband of 73 years, Albert Niehaus, Sr. She will be deeply missed by her three children, Albert Niehaus, Jr., Jill Niehaus and Peggy Shellock (Ron) and five grandchildren, Matthew, Lauren, Kurt, David and Lesley. GiGi was adored by her sixteen great-grandchildren. Rev. Scott Brown and Rev. Gene Ryan officiated a private graveside service at Old Tennent Cemetery on May 4. 2023. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of the arrangements.
