Obituary of Sophie Patricia Polchak

Sophie Patricia Polchak ("Aunt Sophie") of Freehold died Saturday, December 13, 2014 at home. She was born in Red Bank, NJ in 1916, but lived most of her long life in Freehold. She was agile and athletic as a young person and was the Captain of the Freehold High School basketball team, which came to be called the "Polcats." She was an expert seamstress with nimble fingers, and owned and managed Atlantic Frocks of Freehold for several decades. She was an integral part of a tight knit group of high school friends known at the BB’s who met together for nearly 70 years. Their activities ranged from horseback riding to tennis to bridge to luncheons. She was a wonderful baker; the family always enjoyed her delicious apple and blueberry pies, apple fritters, and strudel. She was a world traveler, adventuring to Newfoundland, Egypt, China, Alaska, New Orleans, and California. Aunt Sophie was caring and reliable - a peacemaker. She was predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Mary Polchak and a sister Helen. She was a beloved sister and a cherished aunt. She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed by her sister Lee Polchak, her niece Kimberly, her nephews Christopher and Jonathan, and her many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews: Caitlyn & Jonathan, Adreana, Constance, Adam, Nyssa, Thaddeus, Sophia, Tirzah, Kaylee, and Ayden. The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, Freehold on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery.
