My name is Sean Mahoney. Mike Fitzsimmons was my next door neighbor on 1st floor Shay at St. Bonaventure University for the 1987-88 academic year. I was a Freshman on a floor of 90% Sophomores but Mike made me feel comfortable and at home immediately. I think I clicked with Mike from the start because we had an incredible number of things in common. We were both Irish Catholics from all boy families. We were both products of a Christian Brothers high school education. Mike attended CBA near his hometown of Freehold, NJ and I went to St. Joseph's in Buffalo, NY. Our parents valued family, faith and education above all. I believe the thing that Mike and I shared more than anything else though were tough, loving Mothers who were the bedrock of their families. I only met Mrs. Fitz a few times at school events and summer escapes to the Jersey Shore, but I was immediately struck by the similarities between the two women. Mrs.Fitz had a no nonsense way of talking but it was always colored with warmth and caring. I'm certain being the mother of so many boys molded the way Mrs. Fitz viewed the world and approached parenting - how could it not? I always felt as though Mrs. Fitz was genuinely LISTENING to me when I spoke. That may seem like a small thing, but so many adults do not actually take the time to listen to what young people have to say. I have heard it said that you can judge a man by the quality of his friends. That does not necessarily apply to me and Mike because I consider him more of a brother than a friend. Mrs. Fitz (okay, Mr. Fitz had something to do with it too!) had everything to do with the type of men Mike and his brothers became. Great job, Mrs. Fitz. You've earned a rest!!!

It has been a great honor to be part of the Fitzsimmons family for over 50 years. All us kids growing up in the Wynnfield neighborhood had many moms making sure we always did the right thing. “Mrs. Fitz” was no exception. Our yards connected but it was our hearts that supported so many good times as well as those when we needed support. You will be missed Mrs.Fitz. Thank you for your unconditional love.

It is with great sadness that we learned of Rita Claire’s passing, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to the entire Fitzsimmons family. Having been friends for a number of years, we knew that both she and John were devout and sincere in the practice of their faith. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who shared in the commitment and joy that a large, loving family provides. Rita Claire’s concern for others and her deep love for her family and friends will remain forever.
With deepest sympathy,
Pam and Jack Szabo

On Behalf of my wife, Gilda, and I, we want to wish the entire Fitzsimmons and Desmond families our heartfelt sympathies on the loss of Mrs. Fitz. She is now at peace and with Deacon John and Danny. Both Mr. and Mrs. Fitz created an extraordinary legacy of 6 children and 13 grandchildren! Jackie Robinson said , "A Life is Not Important, Except It's Impact On Other Lives." The 19 people that are part of the Fitzsimmons Legacy will have an Impact on so many lives for Decades to come!
