Obituary of Helen Schultz

A viewing for Helen Schultz 78, of Freehold NJ, will be held on Friday May 27, 2022, from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm at Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 28, 2022, 10:00am at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 58 Main Street Englishtown, NJ. Burial will follow at Old Tennent Cemetery, Manalapan, NJ. Helen was born on Saturday September 18, 1943, in New York City, New York to Edmund F. and Elizabeth M. Gorton. She was baptized in Long Island, NY, where she lived with her parents and her brother Edmund, until she was 11 years old. At that time her parents moved to Westfield, New Jersey, where Helen eventually graduated from Holy Trinity High School, Westfield, NJ, in 1961. She met her then eventual husband Joseph W. Schultz in her sophomore year of high school. She was married in 1965. She then proceeded to have four children, Joseph Jr., Kevin, Kathleen, and Michael and moved to Manalapan, NJ to raise her family with her husband. Helen was employed by Oppenheimer & Company, Red Bank, NJ, where she worked and retired after 23 years as office manager. Helen truly loved every bit about her job. Helen’s interests ranged from watching her grandchildren playing sports to enjoying going to the Freehold Racetrack and let’s not forget her favorite spot, Atlantic City. But her true past time was reading mystery novels. Helen had no problem reading 400-page books in a few days. Reading was truly relaxing to Helen and she enjoyed it very much. Helen was also huge fan of the Howell Rebels wrestling and football teams. Her grandson Joey always knew where his grandma Helen was, whether it was at a football game or wrestling match. Helen treated all the Rebels the way she treated her grandson. She loved all the Rebel wrestlers and football players. You could always find Helen in the front row. Garage and estate sales were never safe when Helen knew about them. She had no problem having her grandchildren up very early to go with her to see what they can find. Helen had no problem bringing the strangest of all things home from her searches. We never knew what she was going to bring home. Helen lived for her grandchildren. There was never a day she wasn’t thankful to be around them and enjoy everything they had to say. Her grandchildren were the brightest spot in her life. Helen passed away May 23, 2022 (ironically on the day her husband’s birthday) in Cornell Medical Center, New York City. She is survived by her son, Joseph Jr. and daughter in law Rena and their three children, Joey, Nicole, and Erica. We cannot forget the family dog Otis. A daughter Kathleen and two sons Zachary and Ryan, and her brother Edmund and his wife Kathy. She is also survived by nine nephews and nieces. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Sr., and two sons, Kevin E. and Michael A. Schultz.
