I will always remember how good Olive and Bernie were to us when he farmed There was always something waiting on my back porch. We lived across the highway from each other for the last 50 years and we stayed in close touch. He loved it when I sent pasta fazool or eggplant over to him. Mark took such good care of him over the last years. He couldn't have had a better caregiver. All I had to do was call and he'd come over to pick up whatever I sent over to Bernie. Bernie was a good friend and I shall miss him. May he rest in peace.

Bernie is survived by his daughter Lori Szpara, his grandson John Szpara, along with his nieces and nephews Bernard, Mary Margaret, Mary, Frances and Benedict.
Uncle Bernie was the cool uncle; at Christmas he gave us (Bernie, Mary, Fran, Ben, and me), neat gifts and presented them in a fun way. He had a love for animals and had at any one time a horse, cow, pigs, peacocks and dogs. He paid a few speeding tickets on someone's behalf (I won't mention who). He was quick to slip some money to whoever helped him on the farm. We always called him Uncle Junior, but I didn't know until recently, that he didn't like to be called Junior.
It's only very recently that Uncle Bernie learned about Lori and Johnnie. I'm glad he got to spend time with them, short though it was. Uncle B perked up when Lori visited, particularly when she brought her birds.
May he rest in peace
