Obituary of Henry Eisenberg
Henry Eisenberg, 97, of Lakewood, formerly of Perrineville, died on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Fountainview Care Center, Lakewood.
His first wife, Luba "Lillian" Eisenberg, died in 1987.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth; four sons, Larry, Sheldon and his wife Judi, Elliot and his wife Kathleen and Phillip. Grandchildren Beth and Adam Schwartz, Marissa and Scott Messinger, Sara and Chris Gazoorian, Daniel and Emily Eisenberg, Rachel Eisenberg, Louis Eisenberg and Marcia Eisenberg. Great-grandchildren, Lila and Ruby Gazoorian, Alex and Lucas Messinger, Jessica and Abigail Schwartz, Eve Eisenberg.
Born in Iwaniska, Poland, on April 20, 1922, Mr. Eisenberg survived the Holocaust as an inmate of the Starachowice slave labor camp in Wierzbnik, Poland, for two years. He participated in a mass uprising in 1944 just before he was to be transported to Auchwitz and managed to escape into the woods and was eventually liberated by the Russians. He lost his entire family to the Holocaust with the single exception of his brother, Max.
Henry emigrated to the United States with his wife Luba and young son. They settled in Brooklyn, New York, for several years before eventually moving to Perrineville, New Jersey, where he became a poultry farmer, raised four sons and was active with the Perrineville Jewish Center. He was also a public-school bus driver in East Windsor for 15 years.
Mr. Eisenberg was loved by his family and admired by his community for his outgoing personality and strong loyalty to friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Perrineville Jewish Chapel, 755 Perrineville Road, Millstone Township on Sunday at 11:00 a.m
