Jim Kovaks was an interesting and unique guy. Although I knew of him in the 80's in his capacity with Abbington-Ney Associates, we formally met when my former engineering company moved to Freehold in 1993. We were doing a site plan in the Borough and Jim was the Borough Engineer. Under pressure from a client to resolve an issue, one of my engineers was hastily making plan revisions and resubmitting unsatisfactory responses to Jim's concern. Jim, in his unique style, wrote to me, "Marry in haste; repent in leisure!" meaning of course, if you make a hasty decision, you will have plenty of time to mull over your mistake later. We immediately connected and became wonderful business acquaintances thereafter. In fact, he asked that I be retained as an outside expert in a court case in which he was involved, which was resolved to his favor. He a Red Sox fan and I a Yankee fan, we had many interesting debates. I have missed him since his retirement and recent ailments.
I am so sorry I was unable to make it to the wake. My condolences go out to Jim's family and circle of friends. He will be missed!
Rest in peace, Jim.
Sincerely,
Mike Geller, PE, PP, CME

MEMORIES OF JIM KOVACS
Jim and I were cousins- his dad and my mom were siblings. As kids we both lived in Perth Amboy
and had frequent “play dates” mostly at his home on Keene St. I especially remember Christmas visits
when we shared each others toys and games. We also spent time at his Dad’s Kovacs Cozy Corner,
across the street from his house.
We went through high school together (Perth Amboy High} and went on to Engineering colleges, Jim to
Rutgers and I to Villanova. We lost track after graduation;I didn’t know of his impressive professional career
and various sports activities. My last contact with Jim was 20 years ago when I messaged him asking
for information related to genealogical research I was doing on Kovacs ancestors. I told him I had traced all
our family ancestors
to a small town ,Farkasfa, in southwest Hungary but could find no Baptism or marriage records in the local archives.
Jim replied that
he recalled his mother telling him that her grandparents came from “Saint Gothard.”. When I looked at the map
of Hungary, province of Vas, I found the larger town of Szentgotthard and that’s where I found the Farkasfa records.
Thanks Jim RIP
