Mary Lee Brown, 88, of Freehold passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Wedgwood Gardens Rehabilitation Center, Freehold Township.  Born in Rome, Georgia to the late James Cooper and Elvinia Riley she lived in Valdosta, Georgia until she moved to Freehold with her three children sixty years ago.

Mary obtained her New Jersey beauticians license and work in several beauty shops until she opened her own place on Center Street in Freehold.  Several years later, she worked at Marlboro State Hospital as a human service technician until she retired twenty-six years ago.

Mary was a very outgoing person, loved to be around people.  She enjoyed cooking, listening to music, especially spirituals, singing in the choir, doing hair, and nurturing her family especially her grandchildren.  She was known for her kindness.

Mary was predeceased by her daughter, Fannie Mae Griffith and husbands Oscar Lee Griffith, Pat Lee Simmons, and Edmund Brown, Sr.

Surviving are her children, Anita Joyner-Holmes and husband Johnny W. Holmes, Frederica, Delaware and Frederick Lee Griffith, Freehold; stepsons, Oscar Lee Griffith, Valdosta, Georgia, and Tim Griffith, Miami, Florida; four grandchildren, Tracy Joyner-Price and husband Raymond, Newport News, Virginia, Kevin L. Griffith and his wife Monica, Monroe Township, Robert D. Joyner and wife Patty, Manchester Township and Melva Wilson and husband Tony, Aberdeen, Maryland; ten great grandchildren, Christopher, Brandin, Daniel Stallworth and Anthony Henry, Newport News, Virginia Amani and Kyle Griffith, Monroe Township, Londin  Joyner, Manchester Township, Elijah, Eniyah and Emoni Wilson, Aberdeen, Maryland; two nieces, Veoma Johnson , Valdosta, Georgia and Rubbie Major, College Park, Georgia; her nephew, Anthony Canada and wife Jessica, Jackson Township; and a host of extended family and friends.

The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Thursday, October 10, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to noon.  Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at noon with Rev. Vestor Dock officiating followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold.
