Obituary of Bryant Putnam Gould

Bryant Putnam Gould, 97, died on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Applewood Estates, Freehold Township. Born in Elkins, West Virginia he grew up in Connecticut, living in Colchester, Middletown, and East Haddam.  He served as a deck officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine during and after World War II and was a licensed chief mate. 

He married Katherine (Katie) Mills in 1949 just three months after they met-they were wed at The Church of the Configuration (The Little Church Around The Corner) in New York City.  They lived in New York until 1963, when they and their two children moved to Manalapan Township, New Jersey.

Mr. Gould was a graduate of the Cooper Union.  He worked for four years as a construction superintendent before joining an architectural firm in 1955 retiring as a Senior Vice President in 1988.  He then headed his own consulting firm until 1995.  A licenses architect and professional planner, Mr. Gould authored books and articles and lectured at universities and conferences.  He served for 12 years on the Board of Trustees for Brookdale Community College, where he chaired the building and grounds committee.

Bryant and Katherine Gould moved to Applewood, a retirement community in Freehold, New Jersey  in 1999.  There they both participated in a number of activities.

Mr. Gould is predeceased by a son, Bryant Northam Gould and by his wife, Katherine. 

He is survived by a daughter, Paige Schmiedeke and her husband, Eric of Hackettstown, N.J.; and by grandchildren, David Schmiedeke of Denver, Colorado, Julie (Mike) Phelps of Orlando, Florida, and Kristie (Sean) Wolf of Tampa, Florida.

Visiting hours will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Sunday, June 23, 2019 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.  The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 33 Throckmorton Street, Freehold on Friday, July 26, 2019 at 10:30 a.m.  Memorial donations to the Applewood Employees Scholarship Fund, Care of CentraState Healthcare Foundation, 225 Willowbrook Road, Suite 5, Freehold, NJ 07728 would be appreciated.
