Obituary of Richard T. O'Brien

Richard T. O’Brien, Sr., 76, of Manalapan Township passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack. He was born in Jersey City. He served in the Army National Guard. He was a graduate of Dickinson High School, Jersey City and a member of the school’s Football Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Hudson County Hall of Fame. He played professionally with the American Football League’s New York Titans and the Saskatchewan Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League. He was a life member and Ex-Chief of the Gordon’s Corner Fire Company, Manalapan Township and a former commissioner of Manalapan Township Fire District No. 1. His wife, Margaret O’Brien died in 2007. Rich was also predeceased by his siblings, Mary, Martin, and Donald. Surviving are his children, Richard T. O’Brien, Jr. and wife Gwen, Kim Powers, Christopher Fagan and wife Jennifer, and Lori DeAngelis and husband Michael; two brothers, Joseph and Robert O’Brien; and his grandchildren, Charlie and Lucy O’Brien, Trinity and Keegan Clifford, Thomas Joseph Powers, Erin, Bridget, and Megan Fagan, and Michael, Amanda, and Matthew DeAngelis. The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy R. C. Church, 58 Main Street, Englishtown on Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent. Gordon’s Corner Fire Company services will be held on Friday at 8 p.m. Memorial donations to the American Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
