Obituary of John J. Maziekien
John J. Maziekien, Jr. of Marlboro Township died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 11, 2018
Born in Century, West Virginia on March 19,1924, John was a graduate of Irvington High School Class of 1942. With the onset of World War II, he enlisted with the United States Marine Corp on December 10, 1942, trained on Parris Island and was a member of the Third Marine Division in the Pacific Conflict.
He was a participant in the invasion and liberation of the island of Iwo Jima.
He returned home honorably on December 24, 1945.
Following the war, he enlisted with the New Jersey State Police as a member of the 33rd class in 1947. After 32 years of service he retired as lieutenant in 1979.
He was Past Commandant and Past Chaplain of the Corporal Phillip A. Reynolds Detachment, Marine Corps League of Freehold and an active member until his death. He was also an active member of the United States Marie Corps Military Order of the Devil Dogs Pound No. 227, Freehold. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4374, Freehold.
He was a communicant of St. Gabriel’s Church, Marlboro where he served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.
John was the 2017 Grand Marshal of the Freehold Memorial Day Parade.
He was a recipient of the American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific, WWII Victory medal.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 54 years, Marie Inez (Conover), his sister, Iris Maziekien, and his parents, John Sr. and Helen Maziekien.
Surviving are his children, sons, John Maziekien 3rd with Jane Wooley, Lee Maziekien and his wife Ginger, and Joseph Maziekien; daughters Marine Inez and husband Jim Dickson, Lou-Anne Maziekien and Mary Ellen Pollinger; and six grandchildren, Shane, Katelyn, Lauren, Alexandra, Matthew and Andrew.
He also leaves behind his beloved cousin, Carol Deer of Lakewood and many special relatives and lifelong friends, notably with the New Jersey State Police, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No, 4374, the United States Marine Corp League and the Corporal Phillip A. Reynolds Detachment No. 203 both in Freehold.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 15, 2018 from 4pm to 8pm at Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.at St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church, 100 North Main Street, (Rt. 79), Marlboro. Interment to follow at St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Rt. 520, Bradevelt, NJ.
