Obituary of Evelyn Blumenthal
Evelyn Blumenthal, beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt lived a life of joy and adventure until she peacefully passed away on July 5, 2018, at the blessed age of 96.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edmund, her parents, Frieda and Isadore Goldberg, her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Florence Gilbert, and her sister and brother-in-law, Sadie and David Metz. Her spirit lives on in her children, Jeffrey (Jill), Stephen (James), Eileen (Pat), grandson Robert and great-granddaughter (Adeline), who adored her and will miss her beyond measure.
Evelyn and Edmund met on the dance floor, she a hostess in the USO and he a soldier far from home. They owned the La Rae Shoppe in Freehold for decades and loved their loyal customers and devoted staff. To this day the family hears from women who shopped exclusively at La Rae and remember Evelyn so fondly.
After she sold the business, Evelyn moved to San Francisco and was often busier than during her working years. She enjoyed volunteering at several non-profits where her children worked, along with ushering at the ballet, symphony and opera. If ever there were a model of a life well-lived, equal parts contribution, escapade and connection, that was Evelyn. She engendered love and laughter wherever she went and was beloved by everyone she met. Evelyn knew every page in the songbook of life (literally and figuratively) and was never inhibited by pitch or tone. Her songs stay with us as her spirit soars.
Evelyn was part of the Cypress Golden Gate (Vintage) community the last several years of her life and found a gorgeous extended family there. Everyone should enjoy such a loving embrace and exquisite care in their elder years -- the family is thankful beyond words and will be forever grateful to everyone there, who loved Evelyn so wholeheartedly.
Services will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. followed by interment at the Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery, Freehold Township.
