Obituary of Linton A. Smith

Linton A. Smith, 70, of Matawan passed away on June 14, 2018 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, migrated to the United States in 1982, residing in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York before moving to Matawan. He was employed at the New York City Department of Corrections for 30 years before his retirement in 2014. He was a diehard fan of the New York Yankees and enjoyed horse racing and the ability to spend time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Avis Sutherland Smith; his children, Gary Smith and wife Deanna, Linton Smith, Jr., Montgomery Smith and wife Michelle and Lorna Smith; his sisters and brother, Daphne Stanford, Morris Gibbon, Shirley Birthwright, Joyce Harrison, and Beverly Johnson; his grandchildren, Lydia, Elijah, Aedan, Liam and Charlotte Smith; 16 nieces; eight nephews; and a host of grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Ivan and Lillian Smith and three siblings, Beryl Heron, Lurline Wilson, and Winston Smith. Linton spent his final days surrounded by family especially his wife Avis who never left his side. The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Friday, June 22, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Chapel, Freehold on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. Memorial donations to the American Kidney Foundation would be appreciated.
