Obituary of George Dewey Murphy

George Dewey Murphy, 94, of Jackson Township, formerly of Freehold, died on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was born in Freehold and had resided there for most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army, 30th Field Artillery Group. Mr. Murphy was employed by the Jersey Central Power and Light Company for over 45 years before his retirement. He was an accomplished bowler and played the piano and accordion. He was well known for his many stories and jokes. He was a former member of American Legion Post No. 54, Freehold and a member of the Veteran’s Group at Bella Terra in Jackson. He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Murphy in 2002; and two sisters, Elizabeth Cashion Henderson and Patricia Ekdahl. Surviving are two daughters, Carol A. Formanek and her husband Joseph Reichert and Linda L. Landon and her fiancé, Michael Bartholomew; and a brother, Robert Murphy. Visiting hours will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent.
