Obituary of Helen Strong

Helen ‘Lynn” Strong, 92, of Englishtown died Sunday, July 2, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Whiting. She was born in East Orange and moved to Englishtown in 1944. She was a member of American Legion Post No. 434 Auxiliary where she served as vice president and president. She established the first Englishtown Memorial Day Parade in 1978, continued to organize for the next 35 years where she also formed her beloved Blue Blazers, and was affectionally known as “Aunt Lynn”. In 1979 Lynn was named director of Englishtown Youth and Adult Activities. She was editor of the Englishtown Crier, a newsletter covering the activities of town. She served on the Englishtown Borough Council from 1981 to 1986 and for a one year term in later 1990’s. She was a member of the Monmouth County Heritage Committee and served on the Board of Trustees for the Monmouth County Youth Detention Center. She was a waitress at Forsgate Country Club, American Hotel, Battleground Country Club and Freehold Gardens before her retirement at age of 74. She was also a volunteer at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township and a fundraiser for construction of the original hospital known as Freehold Area Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1999. Surviving are two daughters, Dolores Whalen and husband John and Diane Barstow and husband Thomas; four grandchildren, John, Melissa, James, and Reanna; and two great grandchildren, Christian and Sean; and her sister, Joan Reid. Visiting will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent.
