Obituary of Gilbert Winsten

Gilbert Winsten, 91, of New York, NY, formerly of Freehold, NJ, died Saturday January 7, 2017, in New York City. He was born on February 4, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York to David and Anna Weinstein. After graduating from James Madison High School, he served in the army during World War II, being discharged with the rank of sergeant. In 1947, he married Harriet B. Liss. Moving to Freehold, Gil and Harriet founded Hargill Supply Company, Inc., a plumbing and heating supply, where he worked until retirement. They were members of Congregation Agudath Achim. For many years, Gil and Harriet also worked with a group of like-minded parents to start and support Eden Autism Services. The first group home opened at Eden was named Winsten House. Harriet Winsten died in 1988. Gil is survived by two sons, Steven of Robbinsville, NJ, and Michael of Somerville, NJ; and daughter JoAnn Winsten of New York, NY. He also leaves a step-son, Brian Hoffman of Glen Gardner, NJ, and two step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his second wife, Evelyn, in 2016. Graveside funeral services were held privately on January 10th at Freehold Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery, Rte. 33.
