Obituary of Eleanor Conlon Tonningsen
Eleanor Conlon Tonningsen, 85, of Matawan, died suddenly on December 30, 2016. Born on June 26, 1931, in New York City, Eleanor lived most of her life in New Jersey, with the exception of several years she lived in Germany and Seattle, Washington.
After graduating from Red Bank Catholic High School in 1949 and Drake Business School, Eleanor devoted her life to raising her three children.
She commuted daily to Manhattan for over thirty years, retiring as Vice President for the Princess-Line Shipping Company. She was an active member of St. Joseph Parish in Keyport.
Eleanor was as vibrant, curious and as sound in mind as in her body until her last day. She won the trust and hearts of many with her unwavering integrity, the sparkle in her bright blue eyes, her witty sense of humor and the warmth in her soul of gold. With passionate enthusiasm she loved a party, a glass of champagne, traveling the world-often at a moment’s notice-playing bridge and golf with friends, but most of all spending time with her family. She is remembered for her generous and adventurous spirit, her wisdom, the constancy of her friendship, ease of conversation and contagious smile.
Her signature gifts of love, friendship and joy, will be cherished forever.
Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, John W. and Mary Conlon, and her twin brother, Bernard “Bernie” P. Conlon.
Eleanor is survived by her adoring children, Eric Tonningsen of Corrales, N.M., Karen Chin of Stamford, Ct., and Tara Backe and her husband Henry of Fairfield, Ct.
She will be deeply missed by her beloved grandchildren, Brendan Conlon Chin, Grace Conlon Backe, Henry Strecker Backe, Christian Curran Backe and Ingrid Anne Backe.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held on for Tuesday, January 10th at 11:30 a.m., St.
Joseph Church, Keyport. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Eleanor’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. For information or to sign the online guest register, please visit www.higginsmemorialhome.com
