Obituary of Olga L. Matlock
Olga L. Matlock, 84, of Jackson Township, formerly of Punta Gorda [Port Charlotte], Florida, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2016.
Mom was born in New Brunswick and grew up in Metuchen where she attended and graduated from Metuchen High School.
Olga’s career working in various positions in hospital administrative/support roles spanned in excess of 45 years. She started as a switch board operator at Middlesex General Hospital then worked in Emergency Room Registration and hospital admitting functions at Middlesex and St Peter’s Medical Center, both in New Brunswick. She finished her career in Florida doing the jobs she loved working part time after retirement for Peace River Medical Center, Port Charlotte, first as an admitting clerk, then a PBX operator.
While living In Manalapan, Mom served as a member of the Gordons Corner Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and also numerous stints as Team Mom for her kid’s sports teams and other activities.
Mom is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Anna Warade; the love of her life husband Chester J. Matlock Sr.; her brother, Andrew; and a stepson Chester J. Matlock, Jr.
She is survived by her family, Mark Matlock, Jackson, Richard and Tina Matlock, Brick, William and Laurie Matlock Jackson, Patty Matlock and Timothy McGahran, Jackson, Linda and Mark Anton of Houston, TX and Jennifer and Thomas Werle, Port Charlotte, FL.
She simply adored her grandchildren, Brittney, Mark, Courtney, Kimberly, Victoria, and Richie. She never missed an opportunity to brag about and express her pride of and love for these kids.
A world traveler, she visited many sites in Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands.
Mom was an incredible cook and baker and also had a remarkable knack for decorating packages, gifts, and ornamental arrangements. If it could be dressed up or made pretty, Olga could do it.
While she was a woman of many talents many feel that one of the most outstanding talents she possessed was the ability to create beautiful and elaborate afghans, making sure each and every stitch was perfect and every bit of embroidery was precise.
During the last four years of her life Mom became a volleyball fan. Particularly she was a fan of the Montclair State University Women’s team, and more particularly, a fan of her granddaughters Courtney and Kimberly who played for the team. She didn’t miss many games and just days before becoming ill had the thrill of watching the girls play in the NCAA Division 3 tournament after winning their conference championship.
Mom leaves us with many memories, stories and she will be missed, but forever in our hearts.
Visitation will be at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Saturday January 7, 2017 from 1 to 4 pm with a service to follow. Cremation and burial will be private.
