Obituary of Leo Slobodin
Leo Slobodin, 89, of Holmdel Township died Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel Township. Born in Brooklyn in 1925 he graduated as an electrical engineer from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He worked at Lockheed Electronics, Plainfield from 1956 to 1987. He was passionate about engineering and technology and had many patents and inventions including the optical signal correlator used on navy ship radar and electronics tag technology used in the E-Z Pass System.
He was also passionate about music and played violin with the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra for 61 years as well as cello and piano. He loved gardening and grew vegetables and flowers outside as well as maintaining a greenhouse full of tropical plants.
He served in the U.S. Army in 1946-1948. An advocate for environmental protection, he was president of the Holmdel Citizens for Informed Land Use. He was on the board that developed the building of Holmdel High School.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Karen and three children, two sons, Alan and his wife Natalie and David and his wife Lesley, a daughter, Elise; and two grandsons, Reed and Noah.
Funeral services will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at the Workmen’s Circle Cemetery, Freehold.
