Obituary of Jerome Irwin Hammer

Jerome "Jerry" Irwin Hammer, of Freehold died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at home. Mr. Hammer was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Hammer was a dog groomer for Pride and Groom, Freehold. Prior to that he was the operator of Maurice Hammer and Son, Howell, a Purina Feed company. He was a member of Jordan Lodge, F&A.M., Oglensky-Jackson Post No. 359, Jewish War Veterans of the United State of America,; served on the Freehold Borough Board of Education for six years, was a member of the Freehold Borough Citizens Advisory Committee, and a member of the Freehold Borough Planning Board for 30 years. Surviving are his wife, Bernice Smith Hammer; three daughters, Lynn Reich and her husband, Ron, Freehold, Rea Epstein and her husband, Howie, Old Tappan, N.Y., and Della Cherchia and her husband, Jeff, Marlboro Township; and seven grandchildren, Adam and Amanda Reich, Jill, Marc, and Melissa Epstein, and Jason and Meryl Cherchia. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold on Sunday followed by interment at Congregation Sons of Israel Cemetery, Englishtown. Memorial donations to the Freehold Public Library or the Freehold Educational Foundation would be appreciated.
