Obituary of Jay P. Whalen

Jay P. Whalen Sr., 78, of Jackson Township died Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at Bartley Health Care Center, Jackson Township. Mr. Whalen was born in New York City, New York, and had lived in The Gardens of Pleasant Plains, Toms River, before moving to Jackson Township one year ago. Mr. Whalen was a truck driver for Nappi Trucking Company, Matawan, and Boutell Truck Company before retiring in 1994. He was an award winning Scratch Board artist who was able to capture incredible still life pictures. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of the American Legion Post 166, Lakewood, a member of the Amvets, Toms River, a member of 40 and 8, Ocean County, a life time member of American Bowling Congress, Ocean County, and a member of the B.P.O.E., Toms River. Mr. Whalen was predeceased by his wife Elaine M. Whalen in 2005, a son, Steven in 1994 and two brothers, Tom and Rick Whalen. Surviving are two sons, Jay P. Whalen, Jr., Jackson Township and Barry W. Whalen, Jackson Township; three daughters, Barbara Turning, Tinton Falls, Valerie Olexzak, Howell Township, and Elaine Rumola, Jackson Township; a brother, Tony Whalen, Florida ; a sister, Mitzi Ruff, Mill Springs, North Carolina., and 12 grandchildren, Gunnery Sgt. Steven Whalen, U.S.M.C., Mindy Duke, Justin, Ryan, Kyle, Catie, Danny and Brittany Whalen, Jerry Turning, Michele Swope, Michael Rumola, and Sean Guinan; and five great grandchildren, Brady Whalen, Steven Duke, Anna and Eric Turning and Rylee Swope. Visiting will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 10:00 A.M., followed by interment at Forest Green Memorial Park, Marlboro Township.
