Obituary of Betty Jane Cottrell
Betty Jane “B.J.” Thurston Cottrell, of Sea Bright died October 31, 2006 at home. Mrs. Cottrell was born in Gilford, Conn. and had resided in Sea Bright for the past 30 years.
She was predeceased by her father, Ralph Thurston and a daughter, Lynn MacGuire.
Surviving are her husband, George Cottrell; two sons, Gerald MacGuire, III and Kevin MacGuire; her mother, Jo Casalengo; a brother, Craig Thurston; and a sister, Ruther Cotter. She also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cottrell graduated from OldSaybrookHigh School, Old Saybrook, Conn. where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Forum Debate Club, the cheerleading squad and drum majorette team. She went on to attend and graduate from the University of Connecticut, majoring in English Literature and French. She was often on the Dean's list and a very active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
Before marrying and raising her family, Mrs. Cottrell was a Clothing Buyer for Filene's in Massachusetts. She was an avid tennis player, snow skier and boater, and until her passing was an avid UCONN Huskies fan.
Memorial services will be held at St. George’s by the River Episcopal Church, 7 Lincoln Ave, Rumson on Monday at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Monmouth County S.P.C.A. 260 Wall Street, Eatontown, NJ07724 would be appreciated. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.
