Obituary of Howard Burtt

Howard Burtt, 81, of Freehold died Sunday, December 10, 2006 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and had resided in Freehold for the past 51 years. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946. Mr. Burtt was a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, Freehold for 25 years before his retirement in 1985. He also was a bartender at the American Hotel, Van’s, and The Attic, all of Freehold. After his retirement he was employed at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold for 12 years. Mr. Burtt was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church; a member of Freehold Council No. 1672, Knights of Columbus and Msgr. Kivelitz General Assembly, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, all of Freehold. He was a member of the Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad serving as Captain in 1966 and President in 1968 and 1973. His wife, Mary Layton Burtt, died on October 28th of this year. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Lynn Burtt and William and Ann Burtt, all of Freehold, and James and Nancy Burtt, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and David Lovelace and Colleen and Robert Ray, all of Freehold; a brother, Roy Burtt, Georgia; ten grandchildren, Lori, Brian, Michael, Kelly, Danielle, Robert, Jaime, Colleen, T.J., and Nicole; and four great grandchildren; Katelyn, Katie, Sally, and Logan. Visiting will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. followed by the Funeral Liturgy at St. Rose of Lima Church, Freehold at 11:00 A.M. The interment will be held at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Freehold Fire Department Memorial Fund, 49 West Main Street, Freehold, NJ 07728 would be appreciated.
