Obituary of Erma B. Dorrer
Erma B. Dorrer, 101, of Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls, died Monday, December 18, 2006 at home. Born in Freehold Township, she lived in Sea Girt prior to moving to Tinton Falls. Well-known in Monmouth County educational circles, she served as an educator for 41 years, retiring in 1973. She was Head Teacher at Manasquan Elementary School for 21 years. Active in the Monmouth County Education Association, she served as president in 1955 to 1956. She was a New Jersey delegate at conventions of the National Education Association, helping to shape the national educational policy. She began her career in the Englishtown Schools, later devoting herself to the improvement of public education through her work on local, county, state, and national educational committies. She was a member of the New Jersey School Women; Delta Kappa Gamma; and the Manasquan Women’s Club. She was a founding member of the Monmouth County Triad, an organization which assists senior citizens. She was First Vice-President of the Monmouth County Federal Credit Union for over 25 years. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Freehold for over 60 years, and later became a member of the First Baptist Church of Manasquan. Her husband, Raymond Dorrer, died in a plane crash in 1959. Surviving are a sister, Mildred Taber, Baltimore, Maryland; a niece, Amy Donohue, Potomac Falls, Virginia; and four nephews, Floyd Bennett, Freehold, Ross Dorrer, Neptune, Sidney Reid, Hudson, Ohio, and Gary Taber, Seattle, Washington. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Manasquan, 47 South Street, Manasquan, on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. Donations in her memory to the memorial fund of the First Baptist Church would be appreciated. Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.
