Obituary of Andrew Ijas
Andrew Ijas, 90, of Jackson Township passed away Monday, August 31, 2015. Andrew was born in Russia of Finnish parents. During his teens years he left Russia on foot, became a merchant marine and landed in New York City where he received safe haven at Ellis Island. He worked primarily with machinery in his career, from construction to fork lift operator and even in retirement, would not remain idle as he delivered auto parts. His passion was history and he was abreast of world events, past and present.
In 1991 he married Virginia Weber, after having been widowed twice. He and his beloved Virginia had 24 happy years before she passed away in March, 2015. They enjoyed traveling abroad, especially to Spain. In the last four years the couple relocated from Freehold and resided at Sunrise Senior Living of Jackson with the support of the caring community of staff.
Andrew is survived by a son, Alex Ijas and wife, Brenda of Toms River. In addition, other survivors are his wife’s family, step daughter in law, Barbara Weber Berry and children, John Weber, Angela Weber Hetrick and husband Brogan and step son in law, Steve Karger and children, Harry, Miriam and Nasia. Nasia was the sparkle in his life and he enjoyed seeing her grow up. Finally, Tom Berry and John Dawes were always supportive and loyal friends.
The services will be held on Friday, September 4, at 11 a.m. at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold with entombment at Maplewood Chapel Mausoleum, Freehold. The viewing will be held on Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
