Obituary of Jeannette Higgins Thompson

Jeannette Higgins Thompson, 94, of Shrewsbury died Friday, August 24, 2007 surrounded by her family at St. Barnabas Hospice, Long Branch. She was born in Englishtown and had resided in Marlboro Township before moving to Shrewsbury 52 years ago. Mrs. Thompson was a first grade teacher in the Fairview School, Middletown Township before her retirement in 1988. Prior to that, she was a teacher in the Marlboro and Ocean Township schools. She was communicant of St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, Red Bank. She was a graduate of Freehold High School and Trenton State College; a member of National Education Association, New Jersey Education Association, and Monmouth County Retired Teachers Association. She was a volunteer for Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Monmouth County Literacy Program, Central Jersey Blood Center, and a member of the Trenton State College Alumni Association. She was the widow of Robert Spencer Thompson who died in 1988. A son, Geoffrey Michael Thompson, died in 1955. A sister, Edna Higgins Holtz, died in 2003. Surviving are three sons, Terrence Thompson, Walnut Creek, California, Robert Thompson, Shrewsbury, and Kevin Thompson and his wife, Robin, North Port, Florida; a daughter, Janet Thompson Hennessy and her husband Gary, Brick Township; seven grandchildren, Suzanne Asku, Caroline, Erin, Meghan, Kevin Thompson, and James and David Kelly; and three great grandchildren, Ryan and Devin Kelly and Arlo Asku. The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Church, 121 Bridge Ave., Red Bank on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. followed interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown Township.
