Obituary of Robert W. MacMillan
Robert W. MacMillan, Jr., 74, of Freehold Township died Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City after a valiant fight with cancer. He was born in Elizabeth on July 7, 1933, son the late Robert W. and Dorothy Wallace MacMillan. He attended Verona Schools and graduated in 1952 from Henry B. Whitehorn High School, Verona. He was a graduate of Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania and received his master’s degree in elementary education from Rutgers University in 1961. He spent 40 years in education, 38 of those years were spent in the Freehold Township Schools. He was a 6th grade teacher, vice principal and guidance counselor spending 28 years as a principal at West Freehold, Clifton T. Barkalow, and Laura Donovan Schools. Bob was a member of the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association and elected to the New Jersey Schoolmasters Association. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Freehold since 1961. He served as an elder, deacon, assistant financial secretary, president of the Board of Trustees, member of the Prayer Chain, and an usher. In recent years since his retirement in 1998 he has enjoyed the calls and visits of his ex-students and teachers. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Power MacMillan, two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra and Eric Foster and Sharon MacMillan, all of Freehold; his sister, Mary Arden "Pete" Bretland, Evanston, Illinois and his aunt, Jean Wallace, Rochester, N.Y.; three nieces and a nephew, and cousins. A memorial gathering will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 118 West Main Street, Freehold on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, PO Box 27106, New York , NY 10087-7106.
