Obituary of Madelyn Gilbert
Madelyn “Miss Maggie” Palmer Gilbert, 62, of Millstone Township died Saturday, April 5, 2008 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township after a battle with cancer. She was born in Neptune Township and had resided in Millstone Township and Scottsville, Virginia before returning to Millstone Township.
She was an administrative assistant for the Township of Millstone where she was employed for 13 years before her retirement in December.
Miss Maggie was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Millstone where she was an elder, choir member, Sunday School teacher, and Bible Study leader. She was a founding member of the Interfaith Council of Millstone Township, a former vice chairperson and chairperson of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, a member of the Millstone Township Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a founding member of the Scottsville Volunteer Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary, Scottsville, Virginia, and a Brownie leader in Scottsville.
She was predeceased by her father Charles Palmer in 1958, her mother Anna Bahm Palmer in 1998, four brothers, Frank Palmer in 1994, Charles and Norman H. Palmer, who both died in 1996, and William F. Palmer in 2004, and a sister, Mary Summer in 2003.
Surviving are her husband, George Gilbert; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and David Swift, Haines, Alaska and Debby and Lee Preiss, Corpus Christi, Texas; a stepdaughter, Reesa Moore, Portsmouth, Virginia; a brother, Richard J. Palmer, Millstone Township; two sisters, Emma F. Palmer, Millstone Township, and Elizabeth McCabe and her husband Edmund, Jackson Township; four grandchildren, T.J. Kane, Caroline and Virginia Preiss and Maddy Swift; a brother-in-law Mel Summer, Sr. and two sisters-in-law, Lorraine and Theresa Palmer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The viewing will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the United Presbyterian Church of Millstone, 211 Millstone Road, Millstone Township on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the United Presbyterian Church of Millstone PO Box 202, Millstone Township, NJ 08535 would be appreciated.
