Obituary of George Ingram
George Ingram, Sr., 93, of Freehold departed this life peacefully in his home after a brief illness on April 11, 2008. He was born March 16, 1915 in Hancock County, Georgia to the late George and Annie Ingram. He was the third of four children born to this union.
He received his basic education in Hancock County, Georgia. Early in his life he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined St. Lewis Christian Methodist Church, Hancock County, Georgia.
On March 9, 1936 he was joined in holy matrimony to the late Lois Louise Long Ingram. From this union ten children were born. He resided in Macon, Georgia before relocating to Freehold in 1954 where he lived until his demise.
He worked at Warner Robins Air Force Base near Macon, Georgia for approximately five years. In 1948 he began working as a groomsman for racehorses for the Chappel Family and for the remainder of his career for Harold Dancer until his retirement in 1980. He developed a great love for horses during his career. He enjoyed watching the horses race. After his retirement he also enjoyed fishing, walking, relaxing in the sun in his favorite chair and talking to people.
Later in life he attended New Beginnings Agape Christian Center, New Hope Baptist Church, and united with Bethel A.M.E. Church, all of Freehold. He enjoyed attending two services in one Sunday while he was able.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Lois Louise Long Ingram; a daughter Hattie C. Ingram, a son, Sylvester Ingram, a great grandson, Julian T. Ingram, and two brothers, Lindsey and Mark Ingram.
Those who remain to lovingly cherish his memory are his daughters, Annie M. “Peggy” Savage and husband James, Franklin, Kentucky, Louise F. Holley and Regina Fenn and her husband Calvin, all of Manchester Township, Loistine Ingram, Freehold, and Talaya “Tee” Ingram, Neptune; his sons, Lenzie “Bay” Ingram and wife Ora, Freehold, Cleveland Ingram and wife Sharon, Riverdale, Georgia, George “Scooter” Ingram, Jr. and his former wife Phyllis, Asbury Park, Ronnie Ingram and wife Wendy, Freehold, and Kenneth Ingram, Asbury Park; a sister, Alice Webb, a sister-in-law, Annie Lee Swain and husband William, and two brothers-in-law, M.L. Long and Amos Andrews, all of Augusta, Georgia; 30 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
The viewing will be held at the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 3 Waterworks Road, Freehold on Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held at the church at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.
