Obituary of George F. Bier
George F. Bier, 90, of Freehold passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 24, 2008. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania he was a lifelong Freehold resident. This first born generation American of Lithuania ancestry, as a boy, skied down the golf links hill with barrel slats tied to his shoes. He went frost fishing at Asbury Park in the winters. As a teenager working at Joe Carr’s Farm he picked 100 barrels of potatoes in one day-a record that was never broken. He caddied at Freehold’s nine hole golf course and jogged around the Freehold Pond daily.
A good student, George like many others, left school to work and help the family. He was a Jacquard-Loom weaver for the A. & M. Karagheusian Rug Mill for 30 years. During which time he played football for the Gulistans as an offensive and defensive left end in a rivalry game against Matawan at Firemen’s Field. George drop kicked the winning field goal. On May 6, 1937 George left the rug mill and went to Lakehurst Naval Air Station to witness the aftermath of the Hindenburg disaster. He also worked for the United States Postal Service, Freehold for 15 years.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician in the southwest Pacific with the 89th Field Hospital. He was a drill sergeant in Tactics and Weapons. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 54, Freehold for over 60 years.
He leaves to celebrate his memory his daughters and sons-in-law, Al and Kate Scarlata, Allentown, Nancy Jones, Manasquan, and Georgene Connor, Oceanport; a sister, Joan Sporman, Union; two very loved grandsons and their wives, Jeff and Emma Jones and Ryan and Taryn Jones, all of California; two loved granddaughters, Dawn Palmer and Cyndy Alexander; four great grandchildren; several nieces; and two dear friends Dimitrios Zazaras and Jackie Williams.
As a friend in the journey of life he will be missed.
