Obituary of Frank J. La Mura
Frank “Francis” Joseph La Mura, 86, of Marlboro Township passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. An All-Star athlete hailing from Matawan High School, Frank lettered in track, football, and basketball in 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1940. He won the 100 yard dash at the Penn Relays in 1940 and soon after graduation enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
During World War II he fought at Tinian and other major battles in the Pacific Theater.
He was active in harness racing for many years and co-owner of the Mount Pleasant Manor Nursing Home and Renaissance Residential Care Facility. In the 1960’s he and his brothers bought the Poet’s Inn Restaurant restoring it to its original 1775 glory.
He was a member of the Philip A. Reynolds Detachment, Marine Corps League.
Frank was one of 11 children born to immigrant mother and father who made their home in Morganville.
He is survived by his wife, Mary McMahon La Mura; three children, Colleen Paolo and her husband Robert, Donna Ferrera and Francis La Mura, Jr.; his beloved grandchildren, Kristian, Danielle, and Brandon; a sister, Leona Boyd; three brothers, Joseph, Al, and twin Richard La Mura; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Services will be held at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery on Friday at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, 3300 Route 66, Neptune, NJ 07753 or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
