Obituary of Mary Margaret Walsh McCann
Mary Margaret Walsh McCann, 58, of Manalapan Township died surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick after a three year battle with ovarian cancer. Mary was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and resided there before moving to Manalapan 28 years ago.
Mary was a graduate of St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn, N.Y., Class of 1972 and completed advanced studies at Georgian Court University, Lakewood. She was a special education teacher at the Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School and a substitute teacher at the Manalapan Schools and Collier School, Marlboro Township for many years.
She was a tutor for Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County, and a member of American Association of University Women. An avid reader and Scrabble player, Mary also enjoyed golf, skiing, sewing and travelling especially cruising. Mary most enjoyed spending time with family and friends at her beach home in Breezy Point, N.Y.
Surviving are her husband, George G. McCann; a daughter, Megan McCann; three brothers, Peter, Christopher, and William Walsh, and three sisters, Patricia O’Leary and her husband, Robert, and Margaret and Kathleen Walsh. Mary is also survived by countless other family members and friends all of whom she enjoyed and loved.
Visiting will be held at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, 186 Gordons Corner Road, Manalapan Township on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Mary’s name to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1400, New York, NY 10122. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.
