Obituary of Gavin Arthur Dance
Gavin A. Dance, 75, of Freehold passed away unexpectedly at The Manor, Freehold Township, on December 26, 2009. He was born in Montreal, Canada and was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended the University of Cincinnati.
He was a television news and radio reporter for WCPO in Cincinnati, and was later a sportswriter for the Cincinnati Post and Timestar. In 1965, he moved to New Jersey and became an award-winning sportswriter for the Newark Star Ledger. Upon his retirement from the Star Ledger, Gavin devoted his time as a foster parent for troubled youths, and this work provided him with great personal satisfaction. He recently retired as the Recorder for Knights of Columbus, Freehold Counsel No. 1672, and was a devout Roman Catholic. He was a kind and loving man of quiet dignity, who will be deeply missed by his heartbroken family.
Gavin was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Isobel Dance, and his infant grandson, Michael A. Talalas. Surviving are devoted wife, Nora Broderick Dance; his three loving daughters, Karen Talalas and her husband Randy of Spring Lake, Christine Letizia of Freehold, and Kathleen Morris and her husband Donald of Lewiston, Maine. He is also survived by his eight magnificent grandchildren, Katie, Ryan, Kyle, RJ, Kelly, Erin, Kiera, and Meghan. Visitation will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold, on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered on Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at St. Rose of Lima Chruch, Freehold. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Freehold First Aid Squad whose members were always courteous and professional during these last difficult months.
