Obituary of Sanford B. Wheeler
Sanford B. Wheeler, 89, of Englishtown, formerly of Chatham, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Pine Brook Care Center, Manalapan Township.
Mr. Wheeler, a Word War II veteran, was honorably discharged in 1945 from the U.S. Navy after serving six years. He briefly worked as a Railroad Locomotive Fireman. He worked for Irving Trust Company as an IBM Accounting Supervisor from 1946 to 1951. He was employed from 1951 to 1964 at Esso International, Inc. as the IBM systems/Procedures Analyst-Coordinator Manager. During that time he earned his Bachelor’s Degree from N.Y.U. School of Finance, Accounts and Commerce in 1961. In 1964 he joined the Freehold Regional High School District. A business education teacher, he taught in the Freehold Borough and Marlboro High Schools and retired in 1985. During Mr. Wheeler’s tenure at Freehold Regional High School he earned his Master’s Degree from Seton Hall University in 1967. He was the Director of the district’s Adult School Program from 1971 to 1974. During his later working career, he worked part time at Freehold Raceway and The Meadowlands. After retiring from teaching he worked for several banks and insurance companies. He was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and horseracing.
In 1977 He was predeceased by his stepfather, George Barthalomis who loved and raised him and by his mother, Lena who died in 1979. Isabelle, his wife of 48 years, died in 1997.
He is survived by a sister, Maria Rowlette, a niece, Christina Jones, and great nieces Athena and Zena Jones, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sanford will always be remembered and dearly missed by the McGantlin and Boleski Families.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent.
